They're Doing to America What They Executed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and defining instances – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to construct it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of deaths due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – truly, no former commander would have imagined – unilaterally destroying major areas of the executive mansion to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As confusing as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they turned a figure of love into an icon of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this change developed at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, however it is still disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him since they are non-believers or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.

It is emphatically definitely not the account of a mighty king appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to homeless parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to evade undercover officers. The infant develops in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. Jesus' answer to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a way to teach the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when a person pilfers your coat you must offer the person your additional clothing as well.

The apparent and clear reality that the Savior from scripture advocates for a kind of radical love focused on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion rather a controversial faith: appealing to the general public, but because of its natural unconventionality demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Best Within Us

Hence I have become heartened to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has been substantial consolation to help build the initiative that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or reject?

America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the finest within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to that which renders it unique and wonderful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it suggest acting as if the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith never occurred; it represents both humility and belief, a combination that serious national faithful should embrace.
