Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
