'Treat game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, described the criminal behavior to the court.

She explained his victims were children from difficult backgrounds who were staying at a summer program which he ran.

The defendant played a "treat game" with the minors, the prosecutor said, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were settling down and tell them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge Ruben had played this game with the young males "for many years", and minors had previously become sick the following morning.

She stated the man had been capable of justifying this for many years as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had suspicions in recently.

The prosecutor stated further: "In the summer" his stepchild had worries about the situation, for good reason.

"They chose" to investigate in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC stated objects including baby oil, ointment and medical needles were found, and his stepchild alerted the police about his concerns.

She stated Ruben proceeded to engage in the "sweet game" with six children that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the next day.

"The police had not gone out by that time," she continued.

The oversight body, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the incident.

Mrs Prior stated the children were struggling to walk due to their sickness, so the stepson called the authorities a second time.

She explained Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a area of five youngsters.
