Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Warriors Party

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of personalities, and a thrilling plot showcasing angels, fiends, and dark forces increasing in power within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure follow below.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The third episode ended with a huge suspense moment and introduced the initial group of characters who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their independent quest, distinct from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

With an extensive roster, it was obvious from the start that having everyone at the same party would be impossible.

This explains, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, connecting the individual narratives before dividing into three separate parties: Soldiers, Planners, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

According to the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where peaceful solutions are rare.

Initially, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might seem mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team understands precisely where to go next after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose demise started the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, breaking into the secret base, striking the character, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then paid off his obligations and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, beyond the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each character has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the companion and trusted friend, desires retribution.
  • Kattigan knows Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty environment.
  • The strong character and The healer, having resisted his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could help the group enter areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his deliverance and will now go with him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This leaves them little choice but to head to the northern region in quest for Casimir.

What’s Next?

Based on episode three’s follow-up content, we find out that the Soldiers table will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight participants to assemble the Explorers and Planners groups.

Viewers can expect finding out which characters will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, streaming live on October 24.
